~Suprise Doctors Appointment~

Well, we have our first suprise doctors appointment tomorrow morning...

Mr. Zachary is already giving his Mommy and Daddy gray hairs!

Last night we noticed that he was sleeping more than he has been and has been hard to wake up...

He also hasn't been eating as much as he was, so Derek and I became kinda worried...

Also, when my Dad stopped by this afternoon, I told him I was worried about those things, he threw in there that he did have a yellow tinge to his face... Hmmm...

So, I called the doctors office and of course had to wait 3 hours to hear back from the advice nurse.  Well, she asked if he had pee-pee diapers and how many (yes and 6 today) and if he was arrousable (sp?)...

I also mentioned to her that we've noticed his breathing can become irratic at some points.  He'll be breathing just fine when all of the sudden he starts to breath really hard... In out, in out, in out... Really fast.

So, she said that we should bring him in... Of course we couldn't get in there this evening for the Acute Care Clinic... We have to wait until tomorrow morning at 910am.  Argh.  She didn't even seem worried about his breathing... I've read that irregular breathing is normal for newborns... But she seemed more worried about his yellow tinge.

She also said that we needed to make sure he was arrousable (sp?)... He didn't need to fully wake up, but at least give some sign that we were bugging him when we tried to wake him up.  Interesting huh?

So, yeah.  We are already having to worry about our Little Man.  I know it might not be something, but hey, I'd rather make a doctors visit and rather be safe then sorry, ya know?

Well, it seems that the Little Man is actually waking up... I better run and try to feed him... If he is interested... Wish us luck!!

And yes, I know I might sound like I'm a worry wart... But like I said, I rather be safe than sorry :)

::Best Wishes::

My son Logan was very similar.  It was incredibly difficult to arouse him for the first three weeks of life.  (I felt so well rested, I thought I was lucky!  Boy, was I wrong!!!)  We were taking him to the pediatrician almost daily for bilirubin tests (for jaundice) for the first week and a half of his life.  I guess the baby liver sometimes can't get rid of the bilirubin as fast as it's developed.  With any luck, he'll very soon outgrow it.  And yes, it does occur more in breastfed babies (but that's certainly no reason to stop breastfeeding him!)  My pediatrician's office gave me that advice.  If you are told to stop nursing, be sure to contact your local La Leche league, they'll be able to connect you to someone who can give you better info.  Good luck, keep us posted!

My baby girl was like that and her pee started crystalizing she wasn't nursing properly and getting dehydrated.  So I had to quit nursing it was horrible.  I had the la Leche people come out she was just too small and could care less about eating....Your doing the right thing  good luck

Awww Pickle, it will be okay I promise.

My Ry was a bit jandice too. Put Little Man in the light from a nice bright window. Hun, I'm glad you're going to the doc's, Reassurance is very important. I'm sure what's going on is the very normal newborn stuff -sometimes they just forget how to do it (the breathing thing) not much practice yet ya know. A gentle reminder is all ya need. Always check on him. I used to run my finger along the inside of my kids neck -the tickle part- to make them stir. I had a girlfriend who put a mirror in front of her newborn's face, but I thought if I made them stir I knew everything was remembered. I did, however, run the chance of waking them up, but I got lucky; my boys were Big sleepers. I hope my ramblings didn't upset you; I had a most excellent baby doc. I worshiped the ground he walked on *wink*

I love you Baby, Call or E Anytime,

OXOXOXOX @~barbie>~~

Oh, I was a worry wart about both of mine until they started being able to flip over and hold their own bottle..LOL...Push Zachery's skin in and when you let up, see if there's a yellow tint...Thats what my doctor had me do and it WAS yellow, so that's why we went in when he had his jaundice...Hopefully everything is fine though...Ill be praying for ya! I'm sure it's nothing though...(((HUGS)))

If he has jaundice, they should have came to your house to check him.  Two of my children, left the hospital with a slight case of it, and a Nurse came out 2 days after we brought them home.  They suggested sitting them in sunlight.  I hope he's okay!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like he has jaundice. Sunlight and encouraging him to nurse will help, unless it's more serious and you have to keep him under the special lights, which many let you bring home and then just bring him in for his billi test.
The breathing is normal. Jackson's seemed more erractic than my other 2. I know I felt disturbed by it, but Jackson was in NICU for 8 days (C-section baby, fluid on lungs), but the nurses and dr reassured me he was fine.
All of mine were BF Jordyn (oldest) and Jackson (youngest) both had a "touch" of jaundice. For Jordyn since she was sent home with it, we just kept her in front of a window when she napped (which was often when they first come home!) Jackson's cleared up before we left the hospital.

You're all in my prayers.

God Bless

definitely sounds like hyperbilirubinemia which your pedi alreadywarned you about. Sounds like you caught it early. Good job mommy!!! Keep nursing him 2-3 hrs to help get rid of the excess bilirubin. It is excreted in his stool and if he is kept well hydrated the level won't be so concentrated in his bloodstream. The nurse asked if he is easily roused because excessively high bilirubin levels in baby's bloodstream can affect his neurological (brain) function. This is extreme and in my fifteen years as a NICU RN I have only seen one case like that. It was heart breaking.
The irregular breathing in newborns is normal. Be concerned if you notice a color change like very pale or even a little blue or gray. Also be concerned if the baby seems floppy meaning like a rag doll. Otherwise in the next couple weeks he will get that whole breathing thing on track.
Hang in there. I imagine you are worried having to wait until morning. I don't blame you. I would be too. But Zachary sounds like most newborns with jaundice...just a mild case.
All five of my kids had it due to ABO incompatibility. I am O, DH is AB and all the kids are A or B. Two needed bili lights....my 24 week preemie and dd # 2. With her we treated with nursing every two hours round the clock and a bili blanket at home.
Good luck!

You aren't a worry wort, you are a Mom of a newborn!  I am glad the doc is going to see Zach today though!  Newborns do breathe pretty quickly, but if he is sleeping more than normal, and has a bit of a yellow tinge then I would DEFINATELY bring my child to the doctor too!  Good luck and keep us up to date!  I will be thinking of you.
Hugs and love, Lisa

Glad you have a doctor's appointment.  You will feel better after they have a look at precious Zach and get a handle on what his situation is..  Smart mommy!  You are absolutely right, better safe than sorry.  Sounds like he is an adorable little guy and we all think he has the best mommy and daddy and big sister ever!!
Hugs,
Lisa

You're doing the right thing.  Irregular breathing is normal in newborns, but I'm with you....better to be safe rather than sorry.  Good luck to you!
